SPCA Searches for Family for Special-Needs Puppy

The SPCA of Texas needs to find a special family for a dog with special needs.

Five-month-old Jasper came to the SPCA in September after being thrown out on Highway 75 in McKinney.

He survived the ordeal, but veterinarians soon discovered the German Shepherd had a birth defect making him unable to move one of his rear legs. Vets amputated the leg and set out to find how Jasper could still have an active life.

Stephanie Knight, with the SPCA of Texas, said an organization called “The Rolling Dog Project” reached out to help.

“They reached out to us and asked if they could make a custom wheelchair for Jasper, and of course we said, 'Yes!'” said Knight. “He’s responded so well to the wheelchair that he’s available for adoption now and they are going to provide him with a wheelchair for life.”

A wheelchair for life is key, since Jasper will most likely outgrow his current one soon. The SPCA believes Jasper may be a pure bred German Shepherd and will one day grow to 80-100 pounds.

So far, Jasper is loving his new set of wheels.

“He loves it,” said Knight. “I’m pretty sure he’s best friends with everyone he meets. He’s met a baby, children, other dogs and he loves everybody. Jasper is a really, really sweet dog.”

The SPCA said Jasper needs a family who lives in a single-story home and one that is willing to give him extra attention and care. Those interested in adopting Jasper should contact the SPCA of Texas.
