Workers will break ground on an expansion project at the beginning of 2016 to add nearly 6,000 grave sites and the cemetery's largest column barium.

There are hundreds of acres available for veterans and their spouses for the next 50 years, but it's not yet ready for burials.

The project was set to break ground in December, but design issues forced the delay. It is expected to be completed in September of 2017.

NBC 5's Ellen Bryan contributed to this report.
