    A man and a police K-9 were struck by gunfire after a pursuit ended with an officer-involved shooting Monday night in North Richland Hills, police said. (Published Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019)

    A police K-9 is recovering from surgery after he was struck by gunfire following a pursuit that ended with an officer-involved shooting Monday night in North Richland Hills, police said. The man who displayed a gun in confrontations with officers also underwent surgery and is considered stable, police said.

    The department thanked the public for their continued support and prayers for Koba, the K-9.

    Watauga police responded to a call about 7:15 p.m. for a "suicidal subject," said Sgt. Melissa Andrews of the North Richland Hills Police Department.

    The man led police on a chase, Andrews said, which ended with a confrontation near the intersection of Caracas Drive and Trinidad Drive in North Richland Hills, police tweeted.

    Andrews said the man showed a weapon during the pursuit and confronted officers after the chase ended.

    North Richland Hills police officers fired at the man, but it was unclear if Watauga officers did too, Andrews said. It's also unclear if the man fired his weapon, Andrews said.

    The man who was struck underwent surgery at JPS Hospital. Police said he is considered stable.

    Koba underwent surgery at a vet hospital in Euless. His handler and the police chief were with him.They hope he can return to his full duties, Andrews said.

    "We are grateful that Officer Koba is still with us," Andrews said. "He has become a very important role in our community as well."

    The name of the man involved in the incident has not been released.

    Andrews said police were not yet sure whether the man had ties to the neighborhood where the pursuit ended.
