House Wants Teen Drivers Off the Phone

Texas teens may soon have to drop the cell phone and keep their hands on the wheel while driving.

On Thursday the Texas House tentatively approved a measure that would ban teens under the age of 18 from using a cell phone while driving, even if it is a hands-free device.

The bill, HB662, includes an exception for calls made in emergencies.

Drivers under the age of 18 could be fined for an offense, but the penalty would not go on their record.

According to a House analysis of the bill, supporters said the goal is to foster good driving habits, not damage driving records.
