Garland ISD Ups Security at Trustee Meeting After Shooting

The Garland Independent School District says additional safety measures will be in place during Tuesday's work session after a shooting outside of the district-run Curtis Culwell Center May 3.

Guests to Tuesday's session will be required to enter the building through the south annex, where an untold number of police officers will be stationed.

"During the meeting, Superintendent Bob Morrison and Board President Rick Lambert will give public statements regarding last Sunday’s incident at the Curtis Culwell Center," the district said in a news release. "Trustees will then adjourn into Executive Session, where they will discuss district security protocols."

The incident referenced in the district's statement was the fatal shooting by police of two men armed with assault rifles who showed up at the center to apparently open fire on a group of people attending the controversial Draw Muhammad art contest; drawings of the Prophet Muhammad are considered blasphemous to the Muslim religion.

Garland police said security at the event included at least 40 off-duty officers, 10 times the normal number for an event of its size, due to the provocative nature of the event.

The district will not be opening the statements up to public discussion.

The meeting will be streamed online here.
