For one day, they got to forget about their problems. When 10,000 people filled Fort Worth's Amon Carter Exhibition Hall on Tuesday, their only focus was soaking up time with friends and family as they enjoyed a warm Thanksgiving meal.
It was the sixth year for the Central Market's "Feast of Sharing" in Fort Worth. More than 1,000 volunteers were on hand to help serve the crowd turkey, stuffing, potatoes and pie with as many extra helpings as they could hold.
"We love serving people and we just learn so much. We just try to bring a smile to our friends," said Debby Hoover.
Hoover and friends from First United Methodist Church of Hearst are in their sixth year of volunteering.
"Every year we get more and more people. Usually we serve the food. This is the first year we've gotten to greet the people, and we love it, because we get a little moment to talk to them," Hoover said.
Each year, the meal is advertised at nearby shelters and food pantries. Central Market provides transportation by bus to help families get in a holiday celebration even when it's tough to manage.
"We're trying to live right in the moment right now. Just what's going on around you. These people are happy. They get to have a warm meal and we get to feed them as much as they want," Hoover said.
