City of Coppell Tests Fireworks Monday Night

The City of Coppell set off fireworks on Monday night to test a new location for its Independence Day celebration next year.

Pyrotechnicians launched two shells at Wagon Wheel Park. The test was needed to make sure the show scheduled for July 3 doesn't interfere with airplane traffic from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Visibility was also a concern.

"The audience is about 600 feet away from the firing site because of the nature and design of the park," said Pyrotex Creative Director Randy Beckham.

Construction has forced the city to move the fireworks show from Andy Brown Park.

"It was a lot higher than we expected it to be (the test launch)," said Kami McGee, special events coordinator with the City of Coppell's Parks and Recreation Department. "We thought trees would be a little bit of a barrier, but it was actually a lot higher than that. We're very pleased with it."

Coppell officials will assess the test run on Tuesday and determine if Wagon Wheel Park is a viable option for the celebration.
