Bye, Bye Birdies: School Finds Hawks New Home

Rescue workers will try to relocate a family of red-tailed hawks from a high school stadium in Southlake on Tuesday.

The birds are living in a 130-foot light pole at Dragon Stadium that engineers have declared structurally unsound. The pole has visible cracks and could fall at any time.

Because the hawks are federally protected, the Carroll Independent School District could not remove them until a new home was found.

The school district has received approval from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to relocate the red-tailed hawks. The permit was expedited because of the danger of the light pole falling.

The hawks lay two to five eggs in March and April. Once they hatch, the baby birds learn to fly within two months.

Carroll ISD will use a crane to lift someone close enough to the pole to safely get the baby hawks out of their nest.

The birds will then be turned over to the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation in Hutchins.

The school district plans to tape the rescue and show it to students in science classes.
