Award-Winning Quilts Are Stolen; 2 Sisters Receive Gift of Encouragement

After two award-winning quilts made by a pair of young sisters were stolen, officials at the State Fair of Texas stepped in to help on Wednesday.

The quilts were stolen from a building in Fair Park a couple of weeks ago.

The quilts were created by 12-year-old Marisol Mercado and 13-year-old Marisela Mercado, and placed 2nd and 3rd place in the creative arts competition at the State Fair.

In a move to inspire and encourage the sisters to continue crafting, officials at the State Fair bought them two sewing machines, sewing accessories and gift cards to buy fabric and materials.

The girls already have plans for projects with their new stuff.

"I'm going to finish my burp rags first for my aunt. She's having a baby,” said Marisol.

Marisela is creating a pillow.

"We have to go buy a pillow form still, but it's going to have a black bag and it's going to have sequins on top. And it changes colors when you rub your hand against it,” she said.

Officials at the State fair hope the two will enter into the creative arts competition next year.
