Body Found After Boat Crash on Eagle Mountain Lake

The body of a boater who had been missing since a boat crash on Eagle Mountain Lake has been discovered.

Texas Game Wardens and TRWD Police confirmed the body of Wendy Nugen, 46, was found at about 6:30 p.m. Monday in the lake.

Just after 7 p.m. Sunday, Game Wardens were notified of an accident on the lake.

Capt. Cliff Swofford says witnesses saw a speed boat hit a wake at high speed and then soar into the air. The boat sank beneath the surface as soon as it landed.

"They're (speed boats) are designed to go very, very fast on smooth water," Swofford explained. "Going so fast that any wake that they may hit will give them lift."

Other boaters rescued a 49-year-old man, presumed to be the driver, and got him medical aid. Swofford says he was taken by helicopter to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. As of Monday morning he was in stable condition.

Divers and boats searched for Nugen until 12:30 a.m. on Monday and resumed the search at first light.

The accident happened in a cove area on the eastern side of the lake not far from Eagle Mountain Lake Park.

"We’re hoping the best, we assume the worst," Capt. Swofford said. "We kind of have to do that."

Swofford says the first Game Warden on-scene found a debris field on the water and located the submerged boat via side-scan sonar.

"Having found the boat helps tremendously," he said. "As soon as we get the boat up, our reconstruction team can go to work and find out exactly what happened."

Those experts arrived Monday afternoon and joined the search on the lake. Teams were trying to raise the boat out of the water on Monday and hoped they might locate the missing woman, who has not yet been identified.
