Suspect in Child Sex Assault Takes Own Life in Front of Johnson County Sheriff's Office

A 35-year-old man sought in connection with the sexual assault of two small children took his own life Wednesday afternoon in the Johnson County Sheriff's Department parking lot.Late that morning, the department had posted a photo of Michael Patrick McGovern on its Facebook page in an attempt to locate him after serving a warrant Monday on his residence near Mansfield in unincorporated Johnson County, KXAS-TV (NBC 5) reported.At the time, the department, along with the FBI, was investigating McGovern for distribution of child pornography. During the search of his home, authorities "seized digital evidence contained on computers and cameras" but did not arrest him at the time.An arrest warrant was obtained Tuesday based on evidence found during the search, the news stations said, as well as a video procured by federal agents that allegedly showed McGovern engaged in sex acts with two children under the age of 6.About 11 a.m. Wednesday, after worrying that he was trying to elude capture, Johnson County authorities published a post indicating that they were seeking McGovern, now wanted for super aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child.According to the Cleburne Times-Review, the search was initiated because McGovern promised to turn himself in but didn't show. Shortly after noon. the newspaper said, a Johnson County deputy spotted McGovern driving through the sheriff's department parking lot from a building window. However, McGovern reportedly shot himself in the head before deputies could reach him to take him into custody.No details about the victims in the FBI's video or their relationship to McGovern have been released, NBC 5 said.  Continue reading...
