House Tentatively Passes Bill to Make July 7 “Fallen Officers Day”

AUSTIN -- The Texas House tentatively passed a bill that would make July 7, the anniversary of the Dallas police shooting, "Fallen Law Enforcement Officer Day" throughout the state.Last July, a gunman killed five police officers when he opened fire on them as they were monitoring a rally in downtown Dallas. The bill was approved by the chamber on a vote of 145-0 and only needs a final, procedural vote, to clear the chamber. Its companion, Senate Bill 798 authored by Dallas Senator Don Huffines, was passed by the upper chamber in March on the first day that non-emergency items could be approved by the Legislature. The entire Dallas House delegation stood at the podium as the bill's author, Rep. Morgan Meyer, presented the legislation to the chamber.   Continue reading...
