During Retrial, Attorneys Dissect Video of Former Mesquite Cop Shooting Unarmed Man

In the first three days of former Mesquite Officer Derick Wiley's retrial for shooting an unarmed man twice in the back, attorneys on both sides of the case have focused on footage of the November 2017 incident.The videos — one from Wiley's body camera, one from his dashboard camera and one cut from surveillance footage of the parking lot — show Wiley walking through the dark toward Lyndo Jones' truck with his hand on his firearm.He yells to Jones, who sitting shirtless in his truck, demanding that he exit the vehicle or be shot.Jones testified earlier this week that he had been doing drugs in the vehicle and had no idea that Wiley, who did not turn on his police lights or introduce himself, was an officer. He got on the ground anyway, but broke free after Wiley pinned him down.As Jones stumbled to his feet and began to run, Jones opened fire and hit him twice in the back.Attorneys cycled through several versions of the footage Wednesday: some slowed down, some brightened, some cut down to single frames or synchronized with audio.   Continue reading...
