7/23: The Joy of Cooking

From live music to live cooking, life is for the living tonight

PLANT OF JOY: Seeing Robert Plant is like seeing Max Roach. I mean, you only have so many chances to see your heroes, and this is one of those chances. Tonight Robert Plant performs under his original group moniker, the Band of Joy at the Meyerson Symphony Center. Featuring a diverse group of musicians such as Patty Griffin, Darrell Scott, Byron House, Marco Giovino and Buddy Miller, Plant has this to say about this reincarnation of the Band of Joy: “It’s been a blast working on these new songs…and I’m enjoying such creativity and vitality. It’s been a remarkable change of direction for all of us and as a group we all seem to have developed a new groove.” That groove starts at 8 p.m.

ENERGY ACTIVATED: The buzz across the river in Oak Cliff is all about tonight's show at the Kessler Theater with Phosphorescent. Athens, GA, resident Mathew Houck is the sole member of Phosphorescent, although he tours with an amazingly talented live band. Houck's career began in 2000 when he released the "Hipolit" album under the name Fillup Shack. A tour of England and Spain followed, and while the European press drew comparisons to Bob Dylan and Will Oldham, the London Evening Standard declared him "the most significant American in his field since Kurt Cobain." Denton's Shiny Around the Edges open what is sure to be a sold out evening to remember.

DINNER AND A MEMORY: Stop! Put down that rotisserie chicken from Tom Thumb. Sometimes you and the missus need to get out and have a bonding activity together. What about a cooking class at Canary By Gorji Mediterranean Steak & Seafood where you actually get to eat your education afterwards? The class includes a three course steak dinner paired with three wines. First course: Panzanella Salad, Second: Prime Beef Filet with gorgonzola mashed potatoes, Third: Turkish Coffee and Port with fresh fruit and creme fraiche. Small, limited class. Cost is $59.00 plus tax and gratuity, and pre-payment is required.
