Start Training for the 2018 Cowtown

Start Training for the 2018 Cowtown

Join NBC 5 and sign up today for the Cowtown! With Fall in the air, there has never been a better time of year to get outdoors and begin training for a 5K, 10K, or longer distance.  Chances are, you have a family member or friend who would enjoy training with you. Studies show that workout partners provide a powerful combination of support, accountability, motivation, and healthy competition. It’s like having a built-in teammate, co-coach, and sounding board. Oh—and crossing the finish line together, victorious? That’s icing on the cake.
Speaking of cake, The Cowtown Marathon is celebrating its 40th anniversary in February 2018, so you have plenty of time to train and come celebrate forty years with the Cowtown. They will commemorate the 1970s origin with disco balls, short running shorts, peace signs, and many other groovy vibes.

With six different distances to choose from, there’s a Cowtown race that’s perfect for you: Kids 5K, Adult 5K, 10K, Half Marathon - 13.1 miles, Full Marathon – 26.2 miles, and an Ultramarathon - 31 miles.

Need another reason to train for the Cowtown?  Proceeds from all race distances benefit Cowtown’s C.A.L.F. Program (Children’s Activities for Life and Fitness,) a nonprofit that provides free running shoes to low-income children all across North Texas. In 2017 alone, The Cowtown awarded over 5,000 grants to help get children running.

At Cowtown Marathon, they believe that it is never too late to start living a healthier lifestyle, regardless of age, size, or background.

Tips for a successful training season:
    •    Start with proper footwear. If your running shoes are worn out, you might experience blisters or an injury that could sideline you. Invest in yourself. Get some good socks while you’re at it.
    •    Wear comfortable clothing that wicks away moisture. Dress to run like it's 10 to 15 degrees warmer than it is, because the body warms up quickly.
    •    Think of your training runs or walks as something you must show up for. Don’t cancel.
    •    Consider writing down your workouts in a journal or calendar, giving yourself a gold star on the days you completed a goal, and logged your miles. It makes the process more rewarding whenever you can look back and see how far you’ve come.
