The Rangers announced some sobering news on Friday when they let it be known that third base coach Tony Beasley, a longtime friend and colleague of manager Jeff Banister, has been diagnosed with a treatable form of rectal cancer.
Beasley was a huge part of the Rangers' staff and success in 2015 after coming to the Rangers with Banister after the two spent 18 years together in the Pirates organization.
According to several local reports, Beasley, 49, is still expected to join the Rangers in Surprise, Ariz., this weekend and will begin chemotherapy while in Arizona. Depending on how he responds, the club will decide whether he needs to be given some time off or proceed as usual.
Beasley and Banister have a long history together, including time they spent together as Double-A teammates in the Pirates organization in 1993.
