Along with 182,000 other baseball fans, I follow Rangers’ shortstop on Twitter (ElvisAndrusSS1). But I’m guessing that exactly zero of us have figured out exactly what he’s doing these days.

In preparing for next week’s jaunt to Spring Training in Surprise, Andrus – and some of his teammates – have taken to wearing some type of half-face oxygen mask right out of a science fiction movie. Or perhaps it’s a prop discarded by Batman’s “Bane” nemesis.

In recent days this week Andrus has tweeted pictures of him wearing the mask, which covers his lower face and nose and includes what looks like three filtered breathing holes. Teammates Derek Holland Robinson Chirinos have since donned similar get-ups.

Maybe the Rangers are on the cutting edge of breathing technology under new manager Jeff Banister. Or perhaps they’re merely preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

A native Texan who was born in Duncanville and graduated from UT-Arlington, Richie Whitt has been a mainstay in the Metroplex media since 1986. He’s held prominent roles on all media platforms including newspaper (Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Observer), radio (105.3 The Fan) and TV (co-host on TXA 21 and numerous guest appearances, including NBC 5). He currently lives in McKinney with his wife, Sybil, and two very spoiled dogs.
