From Henderson Street to Magnolia Avenue, hot dogs are...well...hot in Fort Worth.
In fact, they're big business for two local food trucks.
"We got into hot dogs because snow cones slowed down for a little bit," said one of the owners of "Big Dawg's in Cowtown," which normally sits at the Texaco at Henderson/Presido during the week, and along West 7th on the weekends.
Plus, there's "The Wiener Man," (yes, that's the actual name of the truck) which parks at Avoca Coffee's parking lot along Magnolia.
"I just saw an open market for it and didn't really have a job at the time," says Wiener Man owner Bryce Tomberlin.
Gourmet stops like these make up a small percentage of the 550 or so licensed food trucks in the city, but these fancier food finds are increasing in numbers and popularity.
"I think the Fort Worth population is just catching onto the trends a little bit," Tomberlin says.
Food trucks are cheaper to start up and they find success in pedestrian friendly areas which are developing in places like the Southside and West 7th developments.
"There's really no place downtown right here where you can get in and out with the parking situation, so this is real nice you can order your dogs and your tacos and be out of here," says food truck fan Frankie Ventrcal.
The mobility of the trucks allows the businesses to move locations for special events and to capture more crowds. To make sure their loyal patrons know where the trucks will set up next, many use their websites, Facebook, and Twitter accounts to display locations, operating hours, and even special menu items for the day.
"It's kind of an essential that you have to have one," Tomberlin says of the social media presence. "I mean, people pay attention to those things."
