Fighting Fire with Fire

Firefighters, police complete in jalapeño-eating contest for charity

Police officers and firefighters from Dallas concluded their little eat-off at the Whataburger location along Stemmons Freeway near Inwood Road to see who can down the most jalapeños.

The winning team receives $750 to go toward their chosen charity and the, let’s just say, second-place team nabs $250 for its charity of choice.

The winners also get some liquid refreshment to quench the oral flames while the losers gotta tough it out. That last part may or may not be true.

Anyway, it’s a publicity stunt for a good cause sponsored by Whataburger. See, Whataburger runs its Free Jalapeño Week promotion this week and needed some way to make a big splash to kick it off, and Valentine's Day probably isn't the best backdrop. Giving to charity counts as a good way, though.

The police officers probably should receive a spot in this contest. Firefighters are accustomed to dealing with hot things.

UPDATED: Oh, and in case you didn't watch the above video -- the firefighters won.
