Wednesday is National Signing Day around the nation, a time when high school students commit to colleges for sports and academics.

Traditionally it's the first Wednesday of February and it is most known for high school seniors signing a National Letter of Intent to play college football.

But it's since expanded to all kinds of sports and high school seniors also sign for academics.

For one high school senior, who is dear to the NBC 5 family and our viewers, National Signing Day has a very emotional tie.

"From the brink of death to college bound. God's work is good work," writes the father (an NBC 5 photojournalist) of Corey Dooley, who has signed his letter of intent to Concordia University in Chicago.

You will remember Dooley and his mother were shot by Richard Richard in 2013. Dooley almost died from his injuries but battled back and got back to playing football at Grand Prairie High School

Richard is now serving 30 years in prison for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and endangerment to a child.

We will also track other sports as they become available. Be sure to send your National Signing Day photos to isee@nbcdfw.com and we may use them on TV.
