Texas Holds 3 Special Elections to Fill Vacant Posts

Texas is holding a trio of special elections, replacing San Antonio Democrats leaving posts in the state House and Senate and another lawmaker stepping down for a new state position.

Special elections will be held Tuesday to fill all three seats.

San Antonio Democratic state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte is leaving her seat to run for her city's mayor. Also stepping down to run for mayor is Rep. Mike Villarreal, a fellow San Antonio Democrat. And Lexington Republican Rep. Tim Kleinschmidt is leaving the House to become the Texas Department of Agriculture's general counsel.

Leading a crowded field to replace Van de Putte are San Antonio Democratic Reps. Trey Martinez Fischer and Jose Menendez.

Six candidates are vying to replace Villarreal, while five hope to succeed Kleinschmidt.
