People in several North Texas communities can now send a text message to 911 in case of an emergency if a phone call is not an option.
Texting 911 only works for customers of the following major carriers: Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T, and officials still say a phone call is best, so try that first.
But if you can't call, such as while in a large-scale emergency or if your safety would be compromised, you can text while in the following jurisdictions, according to the North Central Texas Council of Governments:
- Allen Police Department
