Supporters Rally ‘Round JWP Sunday

County commissioner’s backers plan assembly

The second of what likely will be a series of support rallies in favor of embattled Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price takes place this weekend.

The assembly is set for 4:30 p.m., July 17, at the St. Luke "Community" United Methodist Church. Not sure why “Community” is in quotes, but OK.

Called the Community Rally for JUSTICE for John, the event features speakers Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, professor of sociology at Georgetown University; Dr. Zan W. Holmes Jr.; Hector Flores, former president of LULAC; Diane Ragsdale, former member of the Dallas City Council; Dr. Juanita Wallace, president NAACP; John Fullinwider; and attorney Cheryl Wattley, all of whom make up a pretty impressive list.

The flier posted to the church website seems to set the tone for the meeting and the movement. It includes catch phrases such as “Bush era tactics working to silence our voice,” “Business as usual; FBI targeting our leaders,” and “John Wiley Price today; YOU tomorrow???”

The hammerhead reads, “DEMAND JUSTICE FOR JOHN.”

I’d hope we all want to see justice prevail, but let’s not be biased about how that justice should play out or prove out. Let the facts and, if it gets to that point, the courts determine justice.

Don’t make up those minds too fast, one way or the other. Or, as a friend’s e-mail signature reads, “Don’t believe everything you think.”
