Sneakers Help Lead Arlington Police to Burglary Suspect

For the first time in a long time, Ben Scheuermann says he and his family can sleep more soundly at night.

“It feels like a win,” said Scheuermann, who lives on Killian Drive in Arlington. “A win for us, you know, for a change.”

For months, he and his neighbors have been dealing with thieves breaking into their vehicles overnight. Scheuremann’s truck was targeted two times in two nights earlier this month.

Last week, his neighbor, Bobbi Eeds, gave NBC 5 home surveillance video showing two men breaking into her SUV, hoping that someone would recognize them and notify police.[[29211953,C]]

Now, Arlington police say they have a suspect in custody.

“In this case, it turned out good,” said Scheuermann.

“This is awesome news,” Eeds wrote in a text Tuesday to NBC 5.

Arlington police arrested 17-year-old Alvin Cook on Friday after he allegedly broke into a home not far from Killian Drive. Once they had him in handcuffs, officers noticed he was wearing orange sneakers and a gray hooded sweatshirt, which is the same thing the suspect in the surveillance video was wearing.

“Cook admitted to going into two of the vehicles that were burglarized after being shown the surveillance images, but denied burglarizing the home where the resident found him inside prompting his arrest,” Arlington police said in a news release.

Cook has been charged with two counts of burglary of a vehicle and one count of burglary of a habitation. His bond is set at $20,000.

A second man seen in the surveillance video has not been arrested. Scheuermann and his neighbors say they won’t be letting their guard down.

“I think some of the other neighbors have mentioned wanting to get cameras also,” said Scheuermann.

Still, he said they’re pleased with the arrest – and hopes it sends a message to any would-be burglars that Killian Drive is not a street to mess with.
