Repairs to Begin This Month on Lake Grapevine Dam

Repairs to the Lake Grapevine dam are expected to begin within the next two weeks, and drivers who cross between Grapevine and Flower Mound on Fairway Drive will have to take the long way around.

Last year's record rainfall caused an embankment slide along the side of the dam facing Cowboy's Golf Course, and the road over the dam will have to be closed to allow repairs.

"They will have to get into the road base just a little bit," said Kenneth Myers, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. "They're going to have to dig out the slide, mix it with lime, put it back in and re-compact and build the slope back out."

Although there's no firm timetable yet, the road will be closed for about 30 days beginning shortly after the repair work gets underway. The embankment slide is nearly 100 feet long and 50 feet tall, located on the side of the dam away from the lake itself.

"Where it is now it's pretty stable, but it's something we do need to get fixed, obviously, It's on the dam," said Myers.

Repairs will cost about $1 million and take four to six weeks to complete.

An embankment slide at Lake Lewisville is on track to be fully repaired by mid-to late-summer, at a cost of $6.4 million.

"The repairs at Lewisville are a little bit more involved," said U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spokesman Clay Church.

The embankment slide at Lake Lewisville is on the water side of the dam and measures 161 feet long.

"They're not uncommon, but it's something we definitely want to take care of," said Church.
