Plano Police Officers Rescue Boy from Burning Home

A 5-year-old-boy is recovering after what some are calling heroic efforts by two Plano police officers Thursday.

The officers rushed into action after spotting the boy inside a burning home on Gillum Drive.

Plano police say officers Russell Harris and Mark Jones happened to be working nearby when the fire call went out at 3:45 p.m.

The officers arrived on scene before firefighters. They found smoke billowing out of the home and a mother unable to get inside.

Police said the officers ran into the backyard and saw two tiny hands banging on a second-story window. It was a 5-year old-boy trapped inside.

The officers then found a ladder, and used it to climb to the window and break it out. Harris pulled the boy from the smoke-filled room, police said.

The boy was rushed to a hospital with severe smoke inhalation, but he is expected to be okay.

The officers began receiving praise online after the story was shared on the Plano Police Department's Facebook page.

One person wrote, "Brave and so courageous. Thank you so much for your service to our wonderful community. It's such a pleasure to live in this fine city knowing that we are protected by officers like the both of these heroic men."

We're told the police officers and the mother were also checked out at the hospital but are okay.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
