Anti-Trump Protests Could Last Four Years: Organizer

“We’re trying to get him to push back on his rhetoric," said Next Generation Action Network founder

The man behind a series of protests meant to get the attention of President-elect Donald Trump said there is no reason to believe they won’t continue throughout his presidency.

“People ask us, ‘Clearly you can’t be protesting for the next four years?’" Next Generation Action Network founder Dominique Alexander said. "Yes we can.”

Alexander said the message he and those who have flocked to downtown Dallas and other major cities want to convey is that Donald Trump must disavow many of the divisive things he has said during his campaign.

“We’re trying to get him to push back on his rhetoric. And we know that in the last couple of days that he has done that,” Alexander said. “We’re not trying to ask him to step down. We know that’s not a chance in hell to do that.”

Alexander spoke ahead of a Monday night protest in Dallas that looked far different from the ones that streamed through downtown for several nights following Election Day. Instead of hundreds marching, dozens gathered and took turns speaking in Main Street Garden Park.

“People are concerned about what [Donald Trump’s message] may look like for America in the future,” Alexander said. “Will this be our nasty political process for the future going ahead?”

Alexander said he has seen and is saddened by the violence and vandalism that has plagued protests in other cities, and that he is proud that has not been a problem in Dallas.

Alexander also challenged the popular argument that he and many of the protesters are simply upset because Hillary Clinton did not win.

“People are saying, ‘Oh we lost,’ and this and that. I didn’t lose anything because I didn’t vote for either one of them because it was a lesser of two evils,” Alexander said. “We would still be out here protesting, making our voices heard if Hillary had won.”
