Northwest H.S. Teens Named in Top Student News Teams in U.S.

Some North Texas teens are going for top honors in television news before they even have their high school diplomas.

Northwest High School's NHSTV was just named as the Best Daily Live Show in the southwest region of the United States by the national Student Television Network.

The team from Justin competed against other schools from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana to earn the honor.

The students will now move on to the national championship in Atlanta this March where they and five other regional champions will compete for best in the U.S.

NHSTV is run by the Northwest ISD's Academy of Media Arts and Technology, a four-year program at the high school that students actually must apply to and be accepted, and then dedicate a large portion of their scholarly focus to those studies.

The academy was started about seven years ago, said advisor Jeremy Raw, who helped grow the program from daily announcements to what it is today.

Now, the full high-definition studio produces an actual TV station for the district, including their daily live news program and entertainment shows produced weekly by the students involved.

"They really immerse themselves in television production and film making," said Raw.

Students in the program said it has them seriously striving for careers in journalism or media, and many of them are starting to select colleges with the goal of pursuing those studies.
