Louisiana Natives Send Flood Relief from Neighbors in Flower Mound

Hundreds packed the Parker Square parking lot in Flower Mound Saturday morning, but unlike usual, the farmer’s market wasn’t the event drawing the crowd.

This time it was three large semi-trailers parked next to several giant boxes and surrounded by volunteers; all working to send some relief to their neighbors next door.

The citizen lead drive called Flower Mound Gives Back to Louisiana was formed by new resident Austin Andrews, who recently moved to the town from the area of Louisiana currently dealing with massive flooding.

“My father who lives in Zackery, Louisiana, his house is under 5 feet of water, he lost everything,” said Andrews. “My sister, she sat on top of Dollar General for 6 hours and waited for the National Guard to come.”

Thousands of people in that area are homeless and several died after heavy rains pummeled the region.

So Andrews decided to do something for the area he still considers home.

On Tuesday, he created a Facebook group asking residents in Flower Mound and the surrounding area to gather any new or gently used supplies they could: food, clothing, cleaning supplies, anything and bring it to the parking lot Saturday morning.

Miguel Arenas from Trihaul Logistics then donated his semi-trucks and supplies to pack all those items up and drive them out to the flood effected communities on Sunday.

Andrews said the items will go to Fellowship Church of Prairieville who will see them distributed to those in need.

Andrews said Saturday he was blown away by the amount of people showing up to help and rallying to the cause.

“You can be little just like us and do something big for people. You don’t have to have a lot of money to do things for people,” he said.
