Rent a Chicken Hatches in North Texas

There is a new way to get fresh eggs for breakfast: You can now rent a chicken in North Texas.

“Rent-A-Chicken” is a national business hatching in Texas and franchisee Lisa Searfoss is now taking orders for customers in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin areas.

Customers pay a set rate to receive a portable chicken coop and enclosed run, feed, a water dispenser, care instructions and two laying hens. Searfoss said it is everything you need to start your own backyard chicken coop.

“I want people to know that if this is something they want to do they can," she said. "Even if you’re living the city, this is something you can actually do."

The company researches all municipal chicken ordinances and are available "on-call" for any chicken-related issues. And they'll help those who live in an apartment or don’t have the space for a chicken rent a chicken and receive eggs laid on someone else’s property.

Searfoss said she first got interested in backyard chickens because she wanted to live a healthy lifestyle and wanted to bring fresh organic eggs to her breakfast table every morning.

Searfoss said the business is a way for people to try urban farming and if they decide it’s not for them, they can return the coop and the chickens.

“Honestly, we were sitting out here one night and I thought, ‘Why can’t you have fresh eggs? Why can’t you just rent a chicken?’” she recalled.

The Searfoss family’s two chickens, Lolita and Lou, each lay one egg per day and the family allows them to run free in their backyard for a few hours.
