Fort Worth police said in a statement Sunday that officers conducting a welfare check at a home in the 8400 block of Tanner Avenue encountered 49-year-old Robert B. Harris. Police said Harris — a registered sex offender — told officers there were two young girls at his residence who were "possible runaways."

Officers confirmed the girls had been reported as runaways in Abilene since Jan. 2.

The mother of one of the teens said she checked her daughter's phone and found notes from a stranger on the app Skout. The mother also said she found a Fort Worth address that led police to the missing teens.

The statement says an investigation revealed "criminal activity" occurred while the girls were with Harris, who is charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and two counts of aggravated kidnapping.

Jail records show Harris is being held in lieu of $200,000 bail. A police spokesman didn't know if Harris had an attorney.

No further details were immediately available.
