Five Prosper High School Students Arrested in Sexual Assault

Police say more charges could be filed

Five Prosper High School students, including the son of Major League Baseball player Torii Hunter, were arrested Monday on charges related to a sexual assault, police said.

The investigation into the alleged sexual assault was reported about a month ago "and culminated with the arrest of these five individuals today," said Prosper Assistant Police Chief Gary McHone.

He would not say when or where the alleged crime took place.

"There's a lot of information we're receiving to date in terms of the actual alleged offenses," he said. "That's still part of our ongoing investigation."

Four of those arrested are charged with sexual assault of a child, and the fifth is charged with unlawful restraint, McHone said.

Two of those arrested, 17-year-old Garrick White and 17-year-old Darius McClinton-Hunter, are adults. White and Hunter are both charged with sexual assault of a child, a second-degree felony.

McClinton-Hunter is the son of Hunter, an outfielder for the Los Angeles Angels. Hunter could not immediately be reached for comment.

However, he tweeted on Monday night: "This is very tough for a father. Thanks for ur prayers and support. Be Blessed everyone!"

He was placed on the Angels' restricted list, The Associated Press reported Monday. Angels manager Mike Scioscia confirmed to the AP that Hunter had left the team, only saying it was for "a personal matter."

McClinton-Hunter bonded out of jail late Monday on $15,000 bail.

His lawyer, Todd Shapiro, said McClinton-Hunter's family is upset.

"Everybody is devastated," he said. "They're very upset. He's a 17-year-old kid. He has a very bright future; he still does. He's a very good student. He's a good athlete. He has a lot going for him."

McClinton-Hunter moved to Prosper two years ago from Grand Blanc, Mich., according to an article on a high school sports website.

The names of the three arrested juveniles are being withheld because of their age.

A representative for the Prosper Independent School District said administrators were aware of the arrests but that the alleged sexual assault occurred away from school.

A representative for the Collin County District Attorney's office did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment.

Prosper police say more charges could be filed.

"Potentially, there are more arrests related to this investigation," McHone said. "As we go through this investigation, we anticipate more information coming to light and more arrests possibly being made."

The rapidly growing Collin County town has an estimated population of 13,000 and 19 full-time police officers.

"We want everybody here in Prosper and the students to succeed and be happy and be safe, and sometimes when we come across this type of information, it is difficult for us in law enforcement, because we are people, too," McHone said.

Prosper has been in the news in the last few weeks because of the domestic violence investigation involving former Dallas Cowboy Deion Sanders and his wife, Pilar.
