Firefighter Adopts Puppy He Rescued From Pond

Less than a week after he was rescued, a North Texas dog is now getting used to life on a big Texas ranch in Hunt County.

The 3-year-old Scottish terrier was stranded on a small plastic fountain in a DeSoto pond last Wednesday.

Firefighter Craig Kirk, technical rescue expert for DeSoto, swam more than 50 feet through cold water to reach the dog and bring him safely back to shore.

“He’s a sweet dog. He really is,” Kirk said.

The dog was microchipped, but his owners couldn't be found. After the mandatory waiting period ended Saturday, Kirk adopted him and renamed him Survivor.

“I think he’ll adjust,” said Kirk. “He’s scared of all the other animals. Of course around here I’m scared of all the animals, we got so many, but he’s doing well.”

One of Kirk's own dogs recently passed away.

“He’s still timid. I think he’s happy,” said Kirk. “The poor guy is nothing but skin and bones, so we’ve been trying to fatten him up a little bit.”

Now on the family ranch, the firefighter and his new friend are quietly building a new life together.

“I think he and I are about the same, want to fade out of the limelight as quick as possible,” said Kirk.

While Indy is not available for adoption, many other pets at the shelter need good homes.
