Bedford Fire Chief James Tindell said someone near the Toscana Villas of Bedford on the 1300 block of Tennis Drive reported smoke at about 4:45 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to find an apartment engulfed in fire, went inside and found the deceased woman.

Fire crews evacuated the building and contained the fire to only the woman's apartment, though six other residences were exposed to smoke, Tindell said. Those residences were later confirmed to be safe and the residents will be allowed to remain in their homes.

Officials have not yet released the victim's name or said if she lived alone. Tindell did say the residences did have smoke detectors.

No other injuries have been reported.

The Bedford Fire Department and the Tarrant County Task Force are investigating the fire. Officials have not yet provided a cause or a damage estimate.

NBC 5's Ellen Bryan and Todd L. Davis contributed to this report.
