Doctors Seeing Flu Patients Who Got Vaccinated

Doctors say they are seeing more patients with the flu even though they got flu shots.

"Several cases a day of people with the flu, and these were just regular people – several of them whom had been vaccinated for the flu," said Dr. Curtis Johnson at North Hills Hospital in North Richland Hills.

"What I wondered is if we've got a resistant flu bug this year," Johnson added.

Michael Jenkins is one of those patients.

After getting a flu shot in late September, he still got the flu in late February and hasn't been able to shake it.

"I was surprised," said Jenkins. "I thought maybe I wouldn't get it after having a shot, but here it came."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says this year's vaccine is a good match for this year's flu virus, and there's no evidence the flu bug has changed over this season.

"We've said all along, that taking the flu shot will not prevent you from getting the flu, you just won't have the severe complications that you see if you didn't take the flu shot," said Zachary Thompson, director of Dallas County Health and Human Services.

The vaccinated patients do have milder symptoms, according to Johnson, and said his colleagues report the same thing.

"It is still concerning that, you know, we're having people who are vaccinated who are still getting the flu," said Johnson.
