Demands for Release of Video Showing How Man Died in Jail Lobby

The brother of deceased Dallas County Jail visitor Joseph Hutcheson confronted Sheriff Lupe Valdez Tuesday seeking answers about how the man died.

The 48-year-old Joseph Hutcheson died after he walked into the Dallas County Jail on Aug. 1.

Witnesses said he was asking deputies for help, but was taken to the ground. Shortly after, he was pronounced dead.

Valdez told James "Eddie" Hutcheson he must be patient, a several friends and two organizations attended Tuesday's Dallas County Commissioner's Court to demand that surveillance video from the jail be released.

The sheriff's department said releasing the video could compromise the ongoing investigation.

"Nobody wins when there's a death by law enforcement. Nobody wins," Valdez said. "But we have to be just to both sides."

Valdez said it was the first time she has spoken personally with any Hutcheson relative, but other members of her staff have been in touch with the family.

Eddie Hutcheson said he was not comforted by the sheriff's words.

"It just made me feel more, talking to her, that she's got every intention of covering this up," he said.

One witness said Joseph Hutcheson was handcuffed by a deputy at the Dallas County Jail and held to the ground with a knee to his neck.

"There was no crime committed. Man goes in there looking for help, winds up dead," Eddie Hutcheson said.

Valdez said 100 people may have passed through the lobby during the incident and she asked more to come forward. Valdez said she refuses to take the rapid action Arlington's police chief did recently, publicly firing an officer just days after the officer shot and killed an unarmed burglary suspect.

"The statements were made way before the case went forward," Valdez said. "I know what I need to do. I need to make sure that this case is done correctly, no matter how much time it takes."

Eddie Hutcheson said an outside investigation should be conducted.

Six Dallas County Deputies are on restricted duty pending the outcome of the sheriff's investigation.
