Dallas Security Guard Tackles Man in ATM Theft Attempt

Dallas police are looking for a masked suspect behind an attempted ATM theft. And if it weren't for the quick action of a security guard, a second man would've gotten away.

It happened early Friday morning at the Grand Hotel on the 7800 block of the LBJ Freeway in North Dallas.

In front of surveillance cameras and a guest at the hotel, two thieves pulled up in a stolen white van, police said.

They jumped out, wearing some sort of mask on their faces, and headed straight for the ATM in the lobby.

The video captures the two dragging the ATM to the front door. That's when the hotel's security guard, Broderick Johnson, jumped into action, stopping one of the bandits. He even got into a scuffle with the man while the other bandit took off in the van, leaving his partner and the ATM behind.

"I seen two people get out with masks on, and I didn't know what to expect, so I kind of waited and I was thinking they were going to go in behind the counter. And so I was kind of waiting to see if they had any weapons on them," Johnson told NBC 5.

Police said Johnson and another person were able to hold one of the suspects down until officers arrived.

Jerry Strange, 30, is a convicted felon, and police say he is now charged with the attempted ATM theft.

Investigators are still working to figure out the identity of the second man and whether the pair is connected to other ATM thefts in the area.
