Dallas police are stepping up patrols in Oak Lawn in response to the shooting that left 49 people dead early Sunday in Orlando, the department announced Monday.
The Oak Lawn neighborhood has been the site of at least 15 attacks since September. Five of those, police say, have been hate-crimes against LGBT victims.
Dallas Police Maj. Jimmy Vaughn said there will be more foot and bike patrols on the streets in and around Oak Lawn.
"We don't want anything that happened in Orlando to happen here," he said.
Vaughn also said the department is stepping up undercover operations in alleys and parking lots.
Vaughn said there is no time frame for how long the increased patrols will last.
It comes as a relief to the hundreds who have left flowers, cards and candles at the Legacy of Love monument in Oak Lawn.

"I want to feel safe when I come down here. I don't want to feel targeted," Kate Timbs said.
