Officials at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport celebrated another milestone in the airport’s Terminal Renovation and Improvement Program (TRIP) on Thursday.
Gates E11 through E17 are now open, as is a 1,800 spot parking garage.
Jackhammers still filled the air outside the terminal as construction crews tear down an older parking garage for a newer one set to be completed next year.
The TRIP project started in 2010 and will cost approximately $2.7 billion when all completed.
The work is being funded through bonds and other resources. It’s work that’s needed as the airport’s original four terminals are now four decades old.
“A lot of these changes you’re seeing are really more to reflect the travel of today,” said airport spokesman David Magana. “For instance, a lot of technology in the terminals as we re-design. A lot more power people can plug into, as everybody’s got devices that they need to plug in.”
Work in Terminal E will cost a total of $688 million. Gates E18 through E32 were completed in November 2014. Work on gates E11 to E17 started shortly thereafter.
Gates E2 through E10 will soon begin work.
The new section of Terminal E features more food and concession choices, including Dallas-based Sonny Bryan’s and Fort Worth-based Chef Tim Love’s Love Shack restaurant.
A new security gate will open next month at E16.
All of the terminal renovations are do to be completed by 2021, most of that work will be in Terminal C. Terminal E work is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2017.
