DART Addresses Hassle for Veteran with Disabilities

A Dallas Area Rapid Transit rail operator is under fire after he tried booting a veteran with disabilities off a train.

On Sept. 28, Rex King III and his service dog, Ronin, were told to leave the train at Victory Station.

"Get that damn German Shepherd dog off the train," King recalled the operator stating over the train's intercom. "This train is not moving until the man with the German Shepherd gets off."

King relies on DART to get to the VA Hospital in Dallas and back home to Denton. He uses the train three to five times a week.

King and his service dog have all the right credentials, and after some convincing by other passengers, the operator let King and his dog stay on board.

In a statement, DART spokesman Mark A. Ball wrote:

"We spoke with the operator about his actions last week when we learned of this incident. DART's policy does allow service dogs which is something that all operators have been reminded of. The driver of that particular DART train has been disciplined and could be suspended without pay."

King hopes the incident will lead to better training and says he'll continue to ride on the train.
