Crews Search for Missing Girl at Galveston Beach

Crews continue to search for a 12-year-old girl who disappeared while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico in Galveston on Thursday.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Galveston Beach Patrol are involved in the search for the child, who was last seen at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

According to Houston NBC affiliate, KPRC, the Coast Guard said the girl was swimming in the water near the Seawall and 57th Street in front of the Galveston Convention Center when she went missing.

The girl was on a field trip with about 20 girls from a Houston-area school, according to the Beach Patrol.

She was on a sand bar about 30 yards from the shore with four other girls and their teacher when two girls panicked.

KPRC said the teacher, who is a lifeguard, grabbed the two students who panicked and brought them to shore. Two other girls safely swam to shore. That's when the third girl disappeared.

She is described as a Hispanic girl wearing a pink swimsuit with black shorts.
