Cleaning Crew Finds Mortar Round at Vacant Home

Ordnance determined to be mortar round

A mortar round found at a vacant home has drawn the attention of law enforcement in Lavon on Friday afternoon.

The device was reported shortly before 3 p.m. by a cleaning crew working at the property on Lake Shadow Drive.

The Lavon Police Department were called to the scene and temporarily evacuated nearby homes after a Collin County Sheriff's Deputy identified the ordnance as a mortar round.

A Fort Hood military ordnance team will dispose of the device on Saturday. The FBI and the Fort Hood advised the Plano bomb squad not to touch the device.

A Lavon police officer will be posted at the house to keep people away from the mortar round.

Earlier this week, a hand grenade was found inside a rental home in Duncanville being cleaned for a new tenant. That device was determined to be non-functioning.
