An F-16 similar to this one may have caused the boom heard in north Tarrant County.

Some residents near Eagle Mountain Lake reported hearing a loud boom and feeling their homes shake Wednesday afternoon.

Lockheed Martin spokesman Norman Robbins confirmed the boom was a sonic boom caused during field testing of F-16's fighter jets.

The spokesman said the testing lasted longer than normal and pilots usually quiet their engines before they reach populated areas.

In this case, they didn't quiet them in time.

Wednesday's testing was along a corridor from Alliance Airport to southern Oklahoma and back, so residents along that area may have heard the jets and their booms.
