Band Director in South Texas on Leave After Heat Sickens 5

A high school marching band director in South Texas has been put on paid leave after five students suffered heat exhaustion during outdoor practice.

A spokeswoman for the Gregory-Portland Independent School District said Wednesday that all of the hospitalized students recovered and have returned to class. Crystal Matern said the district is investigating Friday afternoon's incident and whether students were given required water breaks.

The Gregory-Portland ISD is near Corpus Christi, where forecasters say temperatures Friday hit the low 90s.

The band director was placed on administrative leave Monday. Matern declined to release the instructor's name.

Some parents attended Tuesday night's school board meeting to raise concerns. Matern says trustees listened but took no action because the issue was not part of the posted board meeting agenda.
