Irving officers responded to several reports about shots fired at the Crossland Economy Studios on the 3400 block of Walnut Hill Lane at about 4 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found the shooting victim — who refused to identify the shooter — hiding under a car in the parking lot.

"Some of the initial officers that rolled up on scene actually heard some of the shots occur," Irving Police Department spokesman James McLellan said. "As more officers got to the scene, they were able to work their way back toward the motel and isolate this one room there were some bullets holes in a window on an upper floor room."

Investigators said two men were fighting when one pulled out a gun and shot the other.

The victim was taken to a hospital and police said they expect him to survive.

By 7:30 a.m. authorities had evacuated most of the motel and a SWAT team had a room surrounded. About an hour later, the SWAT team left without making an arrest.

Police were questioning one man, but he was released.

NBC 5's Anthony Kiekow and Holley Ford contributed to this report.
