Job Seekers Turn to Twitter for Openings: Experts

College seniors around the country are starting that big push to find jobs for after graduation. Many of them are using Twitter as their primary search tool.

"It's a whole new frontier," said Debbie Saviano, a social media strategist for Women's Leadership Live.

Job seekers who go to the search bar at the top right corner of their Twitter page, and search for job listings in their city, will likely find pages of postings. They can even search for specific fields.

"The thing with social media is, it's right now," Saviano said. "Other traditional platforms are almost second-hand, because people can go directly to Twitter, and it's all right there."

Seventy-percent of people these days are taking referrals and recommendations through social media, according to Saviano.

The key is to not only search for jobs, but to also follow and engage employers. Social media experts say most brands don't have a lot of repeat engagement from individual users, which means you can stand out from the crowd if you retweet, favorite and reply to tweets in meaningful ways.

Saviano said it's also important to maximize your social media profiles with head shots and well-written bios.

"We're a brand today, and because of social media, we're always on. We always have a first impression that we have to make, and with Twitter, it's always a real, live conversation," she said.
