A premiere event for an MTV series scheduled for Monday night was canceled as a result of "unanticipated events," according to NBC affiliate WFLA.

Alex Kompothecras, one of the show’s cast members, said he was friends with one of the men shown in a recent video featuring a speeding boat and shark seen being dragged behind it, according to the report.

He reportedly made the announcement in an Instagram post, which has since been deleted.

The video sparked an investigation, and last week the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said it identified the men featured in the clip that disturbed Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

In a video that the FWC released, one of the men seems to say "look, it's already almost dead," referring to the shark behind the boat.

The show focuses on a group of college kids and debuted Monday at 10 p.m.

On the show's Facebook page, it's described as a "docuseries [that] follows a group of young adults confronting issues of love, heartbreak, betrayal, class and looming adulthood."

A Facebook page called "Boycott Siesta Key MTV" urged MTV to cancel the show earlier this month.

"Do the right thing MTV and cancel this show," the post said. "Known animal abusers will be appearing on it."

Siesta Beach residents were concerned about the effect the show would have on the community earlier this month.
