Dwayne Harris started Saturday night’s preseason game with the St. Louis Rams on the field with the first team offense, as the No. 2 receiver, and quickly made some large strides in the team’s still undecided race for the No. 3 spot behind Miles Austin and Dez Bryant.
Harris caught two touchdown passes (one of 61 yards and one of 28) from starting quarterback Tony Romo, which may be a sign that the second-year receiver and the Pro Bowl quarterback are developing an on-field rapport--and this can only help the East Carolina product in the long run.
“[Romo] always tells me, ‘Harris, you got great ability, you just got to eliminate the mental mistakes,’” said Harris, who finished Saturday night with three catches for 118 yards and the pair of scores, per the Dallas Morning News. “And that’s what I was trying to do [Saturday night], eliminate all the mental mistakes and try to cut down on missed assignments and just do my job.”
As the only receiver in the bunch with an NFL reception, Kevin Ogletree most likely remains in the lead for the No. 3 receiver spot, but with a performance like Harris’ on Saturday night, it’s clear that the position battle is still far from being over.
