Texans P Shane Lechler Hits JerryTron, Wins Free Dinners

Shane Lechler became the third punter to hit the center-hung video board at AT&T Stadium on Thursday

Back when AT&T Stadium first opened, before it was called AT&T Stadium, Jerry Jones boldly (at the time) declared that the center-hung video board wouldn’t be hit by any punts unless the punter was TRYING to hit it.

That’s proved to be true, for the most part. Prior to Thursday night, the JerryTron had been hit only twice, and only once in a regular season game. That was last year, when Cowboys’ punter Chris Jones got a piece of the board during the Week 4 victory over the Saints.

Then on Thursday night, Texans’ punter Shane Lechler hit the JerryTron for the third time in its existence, and he left no doubt he was trying to accomplish the feat. After the Cowboys’ 21-14 exhibition win, the veteran and Texas A&M product Lechler said he had some free dinners coming from teammates as a reward for pulling off the JerryTron shot in the fourth quarter, prompting a “re-do.”

I think I’m going to win multiple dinners,” Lechler said, per Pro Football Talk. “I had a little wager going with some guys. I hit it twice in warmups. I felt good about hitting it on that punt, but not good enough to tell everybody not to run down the field. That’s the first time I’ve had a do-over for hitting a scoreboard.”
