It's a pretty much widely assumed opinion that Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones meddles in the business of his head coach and scouting department.
One of his former head coaches says that's not the case, as hard as that might be to believe. Barry Switzer, who coached the Cowboys to a Super Bowl XXX victory and was promptly fired a few years later said that assumption simply isn't true.
“He doesn’t interfere with the coaches," Switzer told 105.3 The Fan. "He doesn’t have anything to do with coaching the team. He doesn’t tell you the play, what schemes to run, how to set the board — the draft board. He leaves that up to the people that know what they’re doing — the scouts, the coaches that evaluate.”
The coaches and play selection, we'll give Switzer that. As crazy as Jones is sometimes, it's hard to believe he has any input in play selection during games, even when he's down on the sideline, which has become less and less often in recent years. But with the draft, that's another story. Jones has said before that he has final say in all matters within the organization, which would seem to include the draft board.
It's hard to figure out what Switzer was doing in saying that. He has no reason to cater to Jones, even though the two remain friends. Maybe he honestly believes it, who knows?
